How to play Battleship

Battleship is a two-player game of hidden fleets. Each player secretly places ships on a grid, then takes turns firing to find and sink the opponent’s fleet.

The rules

Placing your fleet

At the start you arrange your ships on your own grid, horizontally or vertically, without overlapping. Your opponent cannot see where your ships are — and you cannot see theirs.

Firing

On your turn you fire at one square of the opponent’s grid. You are told whether it is a hit or a miss. A ship is sunk when every one of its squares has been hit.

Winning

The first player to sink the entire enemy fleet wins. Track your hits and misses to deduce where ships lie — a hit usually means more of that ship is adjacent.

Fair play

Fleets are kept hidden on the server, so neither player (nor a spectator) can ever peek at the other’s ships. You only ever see your own board and the shots you’ve fired.
